Approach is the debut album from Tympanik Audio-signed artist Subheim (Kostas K.). Not necessarily strictly melancholy, but still falling under the increasingly blurred realm of really dark and atmospheric music. His artist profile at Tympanik states:

Complex and uncompromising, Subheim’s debut album on Tympanik Audio is full of intricate rhythms, deep reverbs, and bitcrushed sounds, combined with pianos, cellos, and beautiful synthwork. Haunting melodies and distant voices meet complex beats and luring atmospheres to create a unique blend of dynamics and emotion. ‘Approach’ flirts with post-rock and atmospheric downtempo styles, while still maintaining an original sound that is both captivating and inspirational.

The album features sparsely applied female vocals throughout; adds quite a nice touch to the overall texture of the music. I came away really impressed with this record; it also features two remixes from Mobthrow as well as Flaque (covered on this blog previously). It also happens to be on sale at Tympanik for $5 USD. Do yourself a favor and order it!

Subheim has created album artwork for numerous other artists on the Tympanik label, including Autoclav1.1’s latest release, Stendeck’s Sonnambula, as well as the Emerging Organisms Volume 2 official label compilation. Noteworthy for me, in part, because album art is a factor in determining whether or not I buy the album in physical format. The album art on this record is outstanding.

An album to have a cup of hot chocolate and listen to on a rainy day.
