Alright, we’re back in business.

Videowave is the latest release from Kuedo (Jaime Teasdale). Along with another individual named Roly Porter, these two artists established a name for themselves by being early pioneers of the dubstep genre known under the Vex’d moniker. The duo’s latest venture together is in Cloud Seed also released on Planet Mu.

These two people together released a handful of releases on Planet Mu, helmed by Mike Paradinas. Mike also creates similar music himself under the µ-Ziq alias (pronounced “music”). This label has been responsible for some of the most vivid and imaginative electronic music released especially in recent years with acts like Machinedrum, Boxcutter, Solar Bears, iTAL tEK, Starkey, newcomer Chrissy Murderbot, and yes, Vex’d as well as µ-Ziq and more. It really is a testament to Mike Paradinas’s direction and leadership that the label is consistently putting out high quality releases like this.

Being an EP, this record has but a few tracks: a remix from Illum Sphere (who typically released on Fat City and a short stint on Dutch dj Martyn‘s 3024 label), a remix from Warp Records staple Chris Clark, and a remix from someone that I’m not familiar with who is called Heterotic (who nevertheless did a good job on his contribution to the EP).

The record does a great job of slicing and dicing complex beats – no surprise there given Vex’d track record in the past especially with hallmark album Degenerate released in ’05. Beyond that, intricately woven idm-esque sounds thrown down on punctual slabs of sub bass complete its short but adventurous stint barely breaking 19 minutes in duration.

Videowave opens with a song called Take Off which is a remix of an unreleased Slugabed track. It’s definitely more dancefloor oriented than everything else on the record and really sets the mood until its conclusion.

Perhaps the most sought after track here is Illum Sphere’s lovely remix of Starfox. Originally released on last year’s Dream Sequence EP (check it out), it is easy to ascertain that this is a fun loving track that contains a lot of crushed beats topped with a 8 bit arcade-esque adventure with a wonkyness that makes the sounds produced by artists like Machinedrum and Los Angeles-based Flying Lotus so desirable.

Carve out the Face of My God is the 2010 release by Kyle Parker, otherwise known as Infinite Body.

If you’ve been following this site for awhile, you’ll know that Belong’s 2006 October Language is one of my highly prized records of all time. Indeed, October Language has established itself as one of the defining albums in my life. In fact, Carve Out the Face of My God may be the closest musical venture that I’ve discovered thus far that I could compare it to in this capacity.

Like October Language, the album is a beatless soundscape that sports intense declarations of ambient noise interlaced with subtle melodies that engage the listener as its progresses through its 40 minute, 11 track journey.

At points, there can be large shifts in direction: from colossal, stratospheric walls of abrasive noise that seemingly tower above you, to uniformly articulated calmness that refreshes and tempers everything that is happening in between.

Defined and intricate, the album moves with purpose with each and every track. The record’s first number begins with a bang: soaring entities of ambient noise collapsing with other, more subtle shifts in its underlying base in partnership with its fairer, more delicate melodic layers. It resigns itself to the album’s second track, entitled “A Fool Persists”, something that could fit neatly into a cinematic, futuristic film.

As Carve Out the Face of My God progresses, its more understated, less noisy side begins to take over. The beautifully destructive noises of the past few tracks become nothing more than preciously delicate notes that possess great structure and texture that really speaks to its author’s ability to paint such an awesome illustration. And just like with October Language, your mind will be blown.

“Vines and Stream” is the debut album from Welder. Providing the listener with melodic and chilled out electronic work and incorporating some nice stutters and other effects. The music has a fluid quality that utilizes light pads and deep bass lines keep the melodies smooth. This album seems to have drawn influences from many different sources, but focuses on combining a more middle-eastern sound with big, downtempo rhythms. A variety of instruments such as foreign percussion and wind instruments to strings and guitars.

Under the repeating phrase “And we’re dying” there is a hidden, but graceful melody. The percussion in this track add spaciousness with reverb while the vocal sample lazily recurs. The focus of this track is mainly minimalist, but with subtle changes here and there that sprinkle a little spice into the mix.

Overall, an extremely well put together album that can fit into just about any situation to listen to. Dabbling with experimental elements in the broad range of acoustic instruments combined with an electronic grounding, “Vines and Stream” makes for a very creative chill-out experience.

Kelpe - Sea Inside Body

Sea Inside Body is a 2004 release from UK artist Kel McKeown, a.k.a Kelpe released on D.C Recordings. While it holds ties to IDM, glitch-hop, ambient and electronica, I would hesitate to classify the album definitively. Although a breakbeat or dub pattern is audible on most tracks, the utilisation of both synthetic and organic instruments definitely bring this album into its own genre of creative expression.

What essentially occurs is a psychedelic journey through sound, each track encompassing a distinctive journey as new melodies are continually introduced and percussion loops reinterpreted. While not recorded in surround, Kelpe tends to bend his mix such that the layers are continually fluctuating in location and amplitude. He makes a sense of movement tangible in similar ways to other glitch hop artists, particularly edIT and Tipper. Interesting to also note the interpretation which can come out  of glitch cutting vocals in tracks like “Age Sculpture”, an arguable parody of the modern British woman.

All in all this album represents three years in a row of my perfect summer jams. It’ll take you from the train to the park to school to work to the party round the block and back home again. From lighthearted to melancholy, consistently bordering on the surreal, this album does what I find electronic music should always endeavour to do – redefine the boundaries of sound. Considering the sheer strength of the technology which lies at the fingertips of contemporary producers, it is arguably a sheer waste of time to simply regurgitate what has already been done.

Eerie soundscapes unfold in the soundtrack to the PC game “RIVEN.” The game and soundtrack are both underrated, but superb in both aspects. The music is a quality ambient, and orchestral work; with stunning melodies that go from intense and fast-paced to slow and more mysterious, and atmospheric. The melodies invoke a feeling that you aren’t really alone, it’s as if there is somebody following or watching you the entire time. The music matches the game’s spacious landscapes perfectly with a theme that appears to cross middle-eastern with a contemporary classical and ambient influence.

“Catherine’s Freedom” really draws out the most intensity in the soundtrack with moving chord progressions and heavy percussion. A sense of urgency is felt throughout this track, as though being chased, while not knowing what may be around the next corner.

The array of different instruments and how they manage to create this awe-inspring mood is what makes this album totally unique both a soundtrack, and as a separate work for the music alone. The combinations of live instruments and ambient electronic synths creates an entire world in itself that is powerful and enthralling.

“Persistent Repetition Of Phrases” is like a journey back in time to a darker, haunting 1960’s era of the United States. The album relies heavily on the gritty, crackling sound like an old vinyl record on a player while melodic piano parts blissfully glide in and out of focus. It’s as if visiting a long-forgotten hall, and being able to visualize ghostly figures dancing and playing piano, or walking down a dim city sidewalk on a cold winter’s night.  This sort of music reminds me of the game “BioShock,” specifically the parts that involve Sander Cohen, in that the music has a certain old, vintage quality, and an atmosphere of sadness, and unrest.

These effects are quite eerie, but also relaxing, and mind numbing in a way. How the the spacious atmosphere in the music manages to almost block everything else around out, leaving only the sound of a disturbing memory.

The album is incredibly deep, but at the same time hollow, and dark. The sheer coldness of the sounds can seem to draw out feelings of loneliness, pain, and many other dismal emotions, and is extremely satisfying from a listening perspective. At times the album is very orchestral also; it involves rich brassy samples with pianos and even string parts to lay a classical feeling over the more electronic background.

Finn McNicholas, or Ultre, definitely has a wild imagination. In “The Nest And The Skull” he mixes plucked string instruments, sporadic beats, and abstract melodies to form a style all his own. The sound is almost middle-eastern sounding at times coming from home-made string instruments McNicholas himself made. The glissandos and slurs in the melodies on these instruments bring a different texture that blurs the line between avante-garde and IDM. The rhythms remind me of Clark‘s in that they generally repeat with a slight distortion.

The sounds that come out of these custom instruments are fantastic; like a symphony color these instruments truly create a vibrant and exciting sound. The IDM elements and abstract style also call to mind those of Amon Tobin‘s with the acoustic sounds used for rhythms, and processed to make really interesting effects.

This album is certainly a worth-while listening if you are looking something a little off the beaten path of electronic music. A plethora of different influences can be heard throughout, but one thing is for sure that the creativity level is simply overflowing with this one.
